There is a saying we are spiritual beings having a physical experience! I believe this to be true, and that our body truly is our temple for our soul and spirit to occupy as long as we are breathing. With this in mind, to maintain any structure takes some conscious doing. To be a healthy human, our being requires good nutrition, exercise, water, and touch. Studies have found that primates do not develop well, and some have even died from lack of touch. Like yoga, massage has its origins in the Far East and was once part of a system of natural health care even in this country up until the late 1900s.
Unfortunately, politics in the medical community pushed it into the back streets literally, and slowly it has been regaining its legitimate place in the healthcare system. While not often covered by insurance, many people regard massage as a part of their healthcare routine, especially after an injury or accident. It not only increases circulation to the venous (blood) and lymphatic systems, massage reduces certain types of edema, provides stretching to the tissue and joints, helps break down scar tissue, improves nutrition to the skin and muscles, and greatly increases relaxation and stress reduction by sedating and relaxing the nervous system.
More recent studies are showing how massage releases endorphins for relief of pain, and may even help prevent cancer cells from multiplying! It is also being used to facilitate the development of premature and diseased infants, thus helping prevent and heal emotional traumas as well. Truly, massage is and can be much more than a physical feelgood experience, something that can be felt on many levels of our being, and facilitate healing, be it physical, emotional or mental!
